City Showcase : Spotlight London February 2003

Held in the Kings Road during the daytime and the Marquee in Islington during the evening.  Please see published listings below.

A unique series of live events was launched on Monday 17 February 2003, giving new and unsigned talent from the music and fashion industries the chance to showcase their talents.

City Showcase – Spotlight London ran from 17-20 February as a festival of live PAs and gigs taking place at the same time as London Fashion Week, featuring emerging London based musicians and showcasing future stars of London’s music and fashion.  Staged by Blencathra Productions, the festival was supported by Mayor of London, the London Development Agency, Business Link for London, Peter Jones, The PRS Foundation and Trade Partners UK, as well as the music and fashion industries.  Internationally renowned musician Dave Stewart was the Patron.

The event was free and featured musicians from different genres including R&B, indie, jazz, roots/world and hip-hop. New and emerging artists performed live during the daytime in shops along London’s Kings Road.  Peter Jones department store featured classical music programmed by the Royal College of Music. Most of the performers were unsigned and City Showcase gave them access to new markets and audiences.

More established artists and groups played evening gigs in the world famous Marquee Club with no charge for tickets but no tickets available on the door. These were awarded as prizes through media promotion and were available on the dotmusic website.

Organisations taking part included Marks and Spencer, Cecil Gee, Jaeger, Caffe Nero, Orange, Virgin Megastores and Peter Jones, who put on fashion shows as part of the festival featuring the designs of Paul Costelloe and Phase 8.
