City Showcase : Spotlight London – September 2003

Held in the Kings Road, Regent Street, Oxford Street and New Bond Street during the daytime and the Borderline, the Mean Fiddler – both in Charing Cross Road – and St Paul’s Church,in Knightsbridge during the evening.  Please see published listings below.

A unique series of live events begins on Monday 22 September 2003, giving new and unsigned talent from the music and fashion industries the chance to showcase their talents.

Coinciding with London Fashion Week, the events support emerging London based musicians and showcase future stars of music and fashion. City Showcase is also hosting a series of workshops and masterclasses hosted by key industry organisations

News release – City Showcase September 2003 – Workshop Programme

City Showcase is hosting a series of workshops and master classes hosted by the key industry organisations including the BPI, MPA, Fashionworks, the London Fashion Forum, ASCAP, Clintons, the MMF, the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. Attendance at workshops is strictly on production of a ticket available by calling the numbers below. All workshops are being held at the Westbury Hotel in London W1.

Top music lawyers Clintons – whose clients include U2, Paul Weller and the Stereophonics – will also provide a free advice line for the entire five days of City Showcase. Unsigned and unmanaged acts can tap into Clintons 40 years of experience in the music industry without paying a penny.

An overview of the signing process from an artist’s perspective. The second half of this session will provide an insight into the organisations/people new singer/songwriters will encounter after signing.

Notes on a Page to Notes in the Bank
The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters examine how contemporary classical composers make their living. Distinguished panellists for this workshop will include John Rutter, David Bedford, Nigel Hess, David Fanshawe and David Stoll. The panel will share their experiences of composing music for a variety of uses, from theatre to churches and schools to concert halls.

Developing Your Business Internationally
This workshop provides advice on everything there is to know about developing your business abroad. Topics will include the best countries to consider, who can help and the benefits of operating Internationally. This is a special programme from Trade Partners UK with support from the BPI.

Business Support, ‘Selling Yourself and Your Ideas’
An interactive workshop led by Business Adviser, Julie Nerney and Business Development Adviser and experienced workshop facilitator, Grant Westbrook. The session will begin with an opening speech from Tony McGuiness, a leading marketing figure in the music industry. The talk will also include a summary of the business support available via Business Link and partner organisations within the London Business Support Network.

Playing the Game
The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters discuss writing music for television, the media and computer games. David Lowe, the composer behind the BBC news theme and top games composer Richard Jacques will be among the participants.

Going for a Song
A seminar discussing issues affecting songwriters, including the relationship between writers and publishers and how writers can take advantage of showcase performance venues. One of the UK’s most successful songwriters, Guy Chambers, will be on the panel, along with Tony Moore, founder of the Kashmir Klub, and EMI publisher Mike Smith.

Catwalk
Lee Lapthorne from Fashion Managing Agents shares his expertise on presenting a catwalk show. Topics will include, finding the perfect venue, model agencies and their pricing structure and advice on producing the actual show.

Pitch your band, artist or song to a key industry representative from Record Label A&R ~ Music Publishing ~ Management. They will give you a constructive summary and sound advice. Submission deadline 12 September 2003.
