City Showcase: Finding the Future 2011

City Showcase repeated its successful Hull – Finding the Future in 2011 again supported and sponsored by the University of Hull. In 2011 the event was extended to all community project and educational institutions across Hull. The day included a slot for musicians and performers to perform their songs live and be critiqued by the panel of experts. Full programme below

11:00 – 11:15
WELCOME SESSION
Nanette Rigg, City Showcase Festival Producer introduces the day’s sessions and the ‘Finding the Future’ panel; Henry Priestman (singer-songwriter -The Christians); Ross Gautreau (Polydor A&R); David Riley (Good Lizard); Keith Harris (manager and Director PPL)

PLANNING YOUR CAREER IN MUSIC
Moderator Nanette Rigg leads a panel discussion
This session is a practical guide in how to map out a career path in music. It includes a brief description of the various structures and companies in the music business and what they do with a brief analysis of how that is changing for the future. It will include a guide as to the organisations that can help people in their chosen careers (industry or as musicians) and will look at access to financing and investment. It will consider the live music scene and how to go about securing live gigs.
FAQs include – how do I find a manager, how do I find an agent, how do I build networks and get ‘signed’.
This panel is designed to cut through these standard concepts and give people new tools to move forward building their own careers, their own audiences, fans etc
The moderator will encourage Q&As throughout and start with a 5 minute intro from each panellist.

14:00 – 15:15
A DIY DIGITAL WORLD – DOES IT EXIST?
Moderator Nanette Rigg leads a panel discussion on the merits and pitfalls of creating an on-line and off line promotional and marketing strategy.
The moderator will encourage Q&As throughout and start with a 5 minute from each panellist.
Technological advancements and the ways music is consumed have changed beyond recognition in the last ten years so how important is setting out a digital strategy and what should you think about when creating yours?
How does your digital strategy fit into your current business, promotional and marketing plans?
Consumers have become sophisticated and selective in their choices and audiences are fragmented and dispersed so how do you identify your target audiences? How do you build your fan base and how do you facilitate interactive dialogue using all media?

15:30 – 17:30
Delegates are invited to perform one song in front of the industry panel to gain valuable feedback on their song-writing and performance skills. Artists have been randomly pre-selected for a session slot.
