Christmas is the time for markets and City Showcase launched its first Christmas Market in Hackney. Dalston Christmas Market took place in Dalston Square on Sunday 1st December 2013. It offered a vibrant, innovative alternative to more traditional ‘German style’ Christmas markets. The market, featuring artisans, artists, fashion and jewellery designers, leather designers, ceramicists, and card makers. It included a live stage featuring music, comedy and performances by local school choirs. Food and drink stalls also featured.
Working with Hackney Council, who wanted to activate this new build public space and ‘put it on the map’ City Showcase erected a transparent covered marquee to protect from the weather and wind and turned Dalston Square into a magical winter wonderland with fairy lights, a tree and Christmas decorations throughout. City Showcase worked with local business to provide ‘market deals’ – the mulled wine and mince pies were particularly popular – and, worked with the Library to provide workshops and events for children and singing lessons for all ages culminating a popular choir sing-a-long as an event finale. From opening to closing there was a steady stream of visitors into the market.
