Since its inception, City Showcase has showcased music representing the cultural wealth of the UK. On 9th May 2010, City Showcase celebrated classical music from all the multifarious cultures of Britain.
City Showcase: “Roots & Flutes” is the first time that the classical traditions of London’s great cultures were celebrated in one event and reflected the diversity and heritage of the city and all it has absorbed over the years from traditional takes on classical music to more diverse interpretations from across the globe. The first ever “Roots & Flutes” was held at the British Music Experience at The O2 and in the Arts Pavilion of Mile End Park. Performers who are now household names were given a visible platform for their art and talent.
The event programme is below the images.
This unique and credible festival will introduce London’s musical roots to a whole new audience and demonstrate the breadth of our culture. There will be a day of music in restaurants and bars at The O2 as well as a rolling programme of talented new musicians at The British Music Experience. Participating restaurants include Gaucho, Union Square, The O2 Store, Slug & Lettuce, S&M, Frankie & Benny’s, Las Iguanas, Water Margin and the Ha Ha Bar.
Headlining at the British Music Experience is the wonderful vocal talent of Camilla Kerslake (signed by Gary Barlow to his new label) as well as the groundbreaking all female string quartet- Raven Quartet, Raghu Dixit (India’s highest selling non film music release), Mosi Conde and the Guzheng Ensemble. These artists will be joined by other fantastic musicians from the classical traditions of Africa, China, India and Latin America and will feature new and hotly tipped young musicians from The Royal College of Music.
City Showcase has previously hosted classical concerts with such names as Jonathan Ansell, Myleene Klass, Sacha Puttnam, Catrin Finch, Amy Dickson, O Duo, Sophie Cashell, Jemima Phillips, Morgan Szymanski and including new compositions from up-and-coming composers including Ben Wallfisch and Edmund Jolliffe. World music acts showcased have included Mosi Conde, The Dhol Drummers, Modeste Hugues and Abdulkader Saadoun. This is the first time that these classical traditions will be brought together in celebration.
Nihal & Bobby Friction – Radio 1& BBC Asian Network DJs: “City Showcase gives the Asian Acts of tomorrow a stage today. By exploring the diversity and creativity of British Asian music, it confounds stereotypes and inspires all those who witness the acts who perform”
Myleene Klass:”Innovative. New artists with new opportunities with a wide demographic of people come to see you! Fantastic!”
